Are you certified to install solar panels, and what makes your company reliable? We are fully MCS accredited through our certification body, NICEIC, and proud members of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC). This ensures you are fully protected as a consumer and guarantees our commitment to high customer satisfaction. At CalTech Energy, we specialise in Solar PV and battery installations because renewable energy is our passion. Be sure to check out our reviews to see the quality of our work!

How do I know if my property is suitable for solar panels?Ideally, your roof should face south, east, or west for maximum sunlight exposure and have enough space free from obstructions like chimneys or skylights. The roof should be in good condition and structurally sound, with minimal shading from nearby trees or buildings. If you live in a conservation area or a listed building, you may need to consult your local council about restrictions. For properties where the roof isn’t suitable, ground-mounted panels are an excellent alternative. Solar panels are particularly beneficial for properties with moderate to high energy usage, especially during the day.
-
Do I need planning permission to install solar panels? In most cases, planning permission isn’t required. Solar panels are considered a permitted development right in Scotland. However, if your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, you may need to consult your local council. For ground-mounted systems, planning permission might be required, but we offer solutions to avoid this where possible. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to consult your local council, such as Highland Council.
-
How much can I save on my electricity bills with solar panels?Installing solar panels can reduce your electricity bills by 40% to 70%, depending on factors like your location, energy consumption, and the size of the system. These savings depend on how much of the generated solar energy you use directly and the rates at which you can sell excess energy back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). We provide tailored financial calculations for every design, helping you understand your potential savings.
-
Will I need approval to connect my solar panels to the grid, and do you handle this process? There are no restrictions on the number of solar panels you can have, but if the inverters output size exceeds 3.6 kW (16A), a G99 application to the DNO is likely required. We often oversize panels relative to the inverter to account for lower winter outputs. If a G99 application is needed, we handle the process for you to make it hassle-free.
-
What warranty comes with your solar panels, and do they require regular maintenance? We use high-quality N-Type panels, which typically come with a 30-year Power Output Guarantee. This ensures that your panels will still operate at 80% of their installed capacity after 30 years. Equipment warranties are clearly outlined in your quotation. While maintenance requirements vary depending on the installation and location, it’s essential to keep your panels clean and free from debris for optimal performance. We offer maintenance solutions and include detailed guidance in your handover pack.
-
How long does it take to install solar panels, and what does the process involve?A typical domestic installation takes 1-3 days to complete. Scaffolding is erected a few days before installation, after which we carry out the roof and electrical work with minimal disruption. Once the installation is complete, we arrange for prompt removal of the scaffolding. After a couple of days for the system to initialise, we’ll return to ensure you’re happy with the installation and provide guidance on operating the system, including apps and settings.
-
How do solar panels help reduce my carbon footprint?Solar panels generate clean, renewable energy, significantly reducing your reliance on fossil fuels. They produce no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and can offset 1.5 to 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, depending on your location and energy usage. Over their lifespan, solar panels contribute to a substantial reduction in carbon footprint, supporting a sustainable future and helping combat climate change.
-
Can solar panels be installed with a battery storage system?Yes! It’s often more cost-effective to install solar panels and batteries simultaneously, but batteries can also be added later. Batteries store excess electricity generated during the day, allowing you to use solar power in the evening or during cloudy periods. This combination enhances energy independence, reduces reliance on the grid, and protects against rising energy costs.
-
Are there any grants, tax incentives, or subsidies available for installing solar panels? There are several incentives available to make solar panel installations more affordable. The UK government offers a 0% VAT rate on energy-saving materials, including solar PV and battery storage, until March 2027. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays homeowners for excess electricity exported to the grid. In Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme provides financial support for renewable energy systems. For tailored advice, contact Home Energy Scotland to explore the latest incentives based on your circumstances. https://www.homeenergyscotland.org/home-energy-scotland-grant-loan
